Many people have probably never heard of the term wiki before, or may have heard of it but be unfamiliar with what exactly a wiki is.  This wiki is intended to help anyone who may be curious about wikis either in or out of the classroom setting.  There are various pages of this wiki that describe the pros and cons of using this type of technology, provide examples of how wikis can be implemented in the classroom setting, and provide useful examples of wikis.

So, what exactly is a wiki?

A wiki is a group of web pages that allows users to add content, similar to a discussion forum or blog, but also permits others to edit the content (Duffy and Bruns, 2006). A wiki also uses special wiki software, allowing the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked Web pages, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. What this means is it is designed to allow people to create and edit web pages without any knowledge of HTML code. The term wiki was adopted from the Hawai’ian language, where ‘wiki wiki’ means ‘fast’.
